A : I thought rolled-up pant legs were the predominant fashion in the 1950’s.

B : They were for a while, but they were replaced by narrow-cut pant legs.

A : “내 생각에는 1950년대에 끝을 접어 올리는 바지가 대 유행이었던 것 같아요.”

B : “그건 잠시였고, 그것들이 지금 길이가 짧고 끝이 조이는 바지 스타일로 바뀐 거죠.”

predominant : 접두어 pre-는 before 즉, 시간적으로 먼저, 미리 라는 뜻입니다. dominant는 lord 즉 주인, 또는 master 사부의 뜻이어서. dominate 지배한다는 뜻이 되는 거죠. 그런데 미리 지배한다는 것이 뭘까요? 이미 우세한 입장에 있다는 의미겠죠. 그래서 우월하고 우세한 것입니다.
