B: How do they know they are inhabitable.

A: They can deduce what type of planet it is from its size, and distance from the star it orbits.

B: I guess it’s only a matter of time before we find life on other planets.

A: 과학자들은 7개의 살기에 적합한 행성들을 발견해왔어.

B: 살기 적합한 곳인지 그들이 어떻게 알지?

A: 그들은 행성의 크기와 궤도를 그리며 돌아가는 거리를 통해 추정할 수 있어.

B: 우리가 다른 행성에서 살게 되는 것은 시간 문제인 것 같아.

 

deduce : 동사로서 ‘추론하다’, ‘추정하다’, ‘연역하다’라는 사전적 의미로 사용된다. 어원은 ‘~를 ~로 생각하다’, ‘간주하다’의 뜻을 가진 라틴어 ducere에서 유래했다. 유사한 표현으로는 infer, conclude, gather, comprehend 등이 있다.
