A: I took the subway to your neck of the woods yesterday morning and we were packed in like sardines.

B: That’s par for the course during rush hour.

A: 어제 아침에 네가 사는 동네로 지하철을 타고 갔는데 초만원이었어.

B: 러시아워에는 그런 일이 보통이야.

 

Neck of the woods: 어떤 사람이 사는 특정한 지역을 뜻한다. Packed in like sardines: 특정 장소가 굉장히 붐빌 때 쓰는 표현으로 ‘packed like sardines’ 혹은 ‘packed in like sardines’라고 쓴다. ‘Sardine’은 ‘정어리’라는 뜻으로, 종종 캔에 가득 담겨 판매되는 작은 생선. Par for the course: 예측할 수 있는 전형적인 모습을 뜻한다. ‘파(par)’가 평균인 골프에서 유래된 표현이다.
