[송오현의 스마트 잉글리쉬] I was chosen as an alternative candidate for the scholarship

A: I was chosen as an alternative candidate for the scholarship, but I can only receive it if the other candidate chooses to go to another college.
B: Gosh! That makes planning difficult, doesn‘t it? Is there a deadline by which the choice has to be made?
A: 나는 대학에서 장학금을 받을 수 있는 후보 중 한명으로 뽑혔지만 그걸 받으려면 다른 후보자가 다른 대학으로 가야해.
B: 아이고, 그럼 계획이 복잡해지잖아, 그렇지? 결정되는 마지막 날짜가 정해져 있는 거야? 

alternative는 대안, 대안책, 선택 가능한 것. 어원적 의미로 살펴보면 alternative는 라틴어의 alterus, ‘다른 사람’이나 ‘다른 것‘이 뿌리이며 ‘또다른 자아’라는 뜻의 alter ego을 보면 어떤 의미를 내포하고 있는지 짐작할 수 있다.
